Sd.KS 78 «Isegrim» — fast quadruped assault mech of the Saxony Empire. Combines the mobility of light machines with the firepower of heavy equipment, serving as a universal platform for infantry support and raid operations.

Historical Context

The mech's name refers to "Isegrim" — the wolf from the medieval epic "Reynard the Fox" (German: Reineke Fuchs),[1] symbolizing cunning and strength. In the game universe, this emphasizes the aggressive doctrine of the Saxon Empire, an analogue of the German Empire.

Design

The mech's body is designed as a low-profile platform with four articulated limbs resembling crab legs. The rotating turret is equipped with a short-barreled 75mm cannon capable of volley fire (4 shots per burst). Medium-thickness armor (up to 80mm in frontal projection) is compensated by speed (3.5 m/s) — the highest among Saxon medium mechs.

«Isegrim» remains a key unit for early and mid-game stages. Production:

  • Low cost (400 iron, 80 oil);
  • Can be produced without improved workshops.

Armament

The main armament is a short-barreled 75mm cannon firing bursts of 4 shots:

  • Damage to light armor: 27 units per shot (108 units per burst)
  • Damage to medium armor: 20 units per shot (80 units per burst)
  • Effective suppression of infantry with the ability to knock down

Combat Use

«Isegrim» dominates in close and medium combat, effectively suppressing infantry and light vehicles. Thanks to its speed, the mech is capable of capturing resource points and disrupting enemy logistics. Smoke screen (activated at the 1st veteran level) masks the retreat of allied forces if necessary.

  • Limitations: vulnerability to flank and rear attacks, weak protection against artillery.

To counter «Isegrim», it is recommended to use heavy mechs (e.g., Wotan) or groups of exoskeletons with anti-tank weapons.

Weaknesses

Tactical disadvantages include:

  • Insufficient durability
  • Vulnerability to cannon weapons
  • Vulnerability to exoskeleton attacks

Tactical Recommendations

  • Not recommended to conduct attacks without prior reconnaissance
  • Requires support from other units
  • Effective in ambushes and flank attacks in late game
  • Optimal for protecting key points and conducting raids

Veteran Abilities

At the first veteran level, the ability to deploy a smoke screen is unlocked, which can be used for:

  • Hiding from threats
  • Evacuating retreating units
  • Protecting other mechs

Arts and Cultural Impact

  • Featured in the art book The World of 1920+ by Jakub Rozalski as a symbol of "mechanized imperialism";
  • Mentioned in the board game Scythe as a Saxon unique unit.

Change History

After the 2023 update, turret rotation speed was increased by 15%, reducing vulnerability to flank attacks.
